A World War II veteran, Chick had no experience in the retail furniture business. An uncle had encouraged him to go into business for himself and with some backing from his mother, the Lebows made their modest start. The original store occupied half of the Jacobs building, the other half housed the local A & P store. Years later the A & P moved out and the store quickly took over the additional space. In the beginning, when something was sold, Chick would go with the part-time helper who owned a truck, and the two would make the delivery. |

| As the business grew, the Lebows purchased the building from Jacobs and subsequently purchased a 4200 square foot building across the street which serves as an annex. In 1984 Lebow acquired urban renewal land from the Redevelopment Authority 100 yards from the store and proceeded to construct a modern 21,000 square foot warehouse to contain the large inventory the store carries.
